What a great interview! This guy sounds like the coolest man on the planet, and exactly what Dylan would want in a drummer. Rock and roll is a mirror--I'm gonna keep thinking about that one for a while. Great stuff, Ray.
Read Petty, the Biography. It's all in there. He is a primadonna. I think he was a good drummer, but unhappy that Tom stretched his wings to perform with others from time to time. Any musician true to their inner calling, is going to need to grow in different directions. Tom could not always have the patience to cater to all of Lynch's whims and needs of the moment.
I'm in the middle of the Petty biography right now. Lynch is the poison apple in a barrel of fresh fruit. Petty gave him opportunities of a lifetime and all he did was gripe, complain and crap talk Tom behind his back. If Lynch was such a talent, why wasn't it he Dylan and Harrison were courting? The truth is Tom was always the talent that caught the attention in the industry needed for that band's success. Tom was the CONSUMATE PROFESSIONAL who never stopped writing, tweaking and working out strategies to keep that band on the trajectory they rode for what? 30 years? And I'm not even finished with the biography yet and it's clear as day to me. Lynch tells this nasty story in the bio of how a young Petty is unaware of a person suffering a seizure in some arcade they are in -- all tripping on Acid. Trying to throw shade that he is uncaring. Warren Zanes, the author, makes sure to let the readers know that Petty had full access to edit/revise any of the content contributors wrote about him. I notice Tom left that in for the readers to make their own decisions. Stan Lynch is a crybaby, sour grapes man child.
After reading this, I'm wondering why Columbia/Sony have never put out a Bootleg Series (yet) covering the Heartbreakers shows. Maybe some legal matter. But they put out the lethargic "Dylan And The Dead" from the '87 shows - would be great to hear a perfect soundboard overview of the Petty tours.

It's a shame that he didn't go into detail about what happened between him and Tom. I was always curious but never able to find out.
They clashed often. From what I’ve read it’s why Stan had to leave the heartbreakers. Stan admits now that he was difficult and lacking maturity
Yeah from this interview that's kinda what I gathered.

Another great issue. Interesting comments re touring with Bob.

Oh man, this interview ROCKED! Too many highlights and best parts, but the part that gave me chills and brought a tear to me was: "I will if you will"
That anecdote just floors me.
This is a great opportunity to hear from a cool man 😎. From his opening on Here comes my girl I'm drawn to a fantastic drummer!
