My favorite Luther story is actually when he met Ellen backstage after a Bette Midler show: He & Bette shared a romantic past but had settled by this point as just very good friends and occasional bandmates. Yet… still… the appearance of Ellen standing behind her friend in the dressing room doorway, eyes timelessly locked with Luther’s who had just glanced up to be instantly transfixed, made her instinctively create with outstretched legs the unmistakable likeness of a barrier by placing her bare feet square in his lap, as if to say: “Mine!”…… But yeah, that didn’t work - Luther & Ellen tied the knot mere months later and to this day share one of my favorite marriages ever.
